Planning Long-Haul International Journeys on Emirates

Operating exclusively widebody aircraft—including the flagship double-deck Airbus A380, Boeing 777, and next-generation Airbus A350—Emirates connects twelve US gateways directly to Dubai International Airport (DXB) and onward to more than 130 destinations across six continents, plus fifth-freedom nonstop routes from the US to Europe (such as JFK to Milan and Newark to Athens).

Within each Emirates cabin class, tickets are further divided into four fare brands: Special, Saver, Flex, and Flex Plus. Because baggage limits, upgrade eligibility, and cancellation penalties depend on which fare brand you choose, our specialists help you navigate long-haul options clearly.

Luggage & Carry-On Rules

Emirates Baggage Policy Overview

Flights departing from or arriving in the Americas operate under Emirates' Piece Concept, which provides up to two checked bags on most fares—though Special fares on certain routes may have reduced allowances.

Economy vs. Premium Cabins

Cabin Carry-On Allowance

Economy and Premium Economy passengers are permitted 1 carry-on piece up to 7 kg (15 lbs) or 10 kg on select routes (max 22 x 15 x 8 inches). Business and First Class passengers may bring 2 carry-on pieces (1 briefcase + 1 handbag or garment bag, up to 7 kg each).

2 Bags Included on Most Americas Fares

Checked Baggage (Americas Piece Concept)

For journeys originating or terminating in the Americas, Economy Saver/Flex/Flex Plus and Premium Economy include 2 checked bags up to 23 kg (50 lbs) each. Business and First Class include 2 checked bags up to 32 kg (70 lbs) each.

Multi-Day Stopover Planning

Dubai Stopovers & Transit Rules

When connecting through Dubai (DXB) for less than 24 hours, baggage is checked through to your final destination. For planned multi-day Dubai stopovers, our specialists can arrange split-sector ticketing so you can claim your luggage.

Check-In & Boarding Timelines

Online check-in opens 48 hours prior to scheduled departure. For international departures from US airports, passengers should arrive at least 3 hours prior to departure; check-in counters close strictly 60 minutes before takeoff.

Changes, Cancellations & Credits

Emirates ticket flexibility depends on the fare brand (Special, Saver, Flex, or Flex Plus). Flex Plus fares generally allow changes and cancellations with minimal or no carrier penalty, while Special and Saver fares carry change and refund fees or non-refundable restrictions.
